people of the 18th century. He takes stereotypes and makes great fun of them throughout the entire play. As such it is certainly a play that possesses many different themes
such as gender, imagery, class, finance, and symbolism. The following paper examines these themes, analyzing Johnsons play. Epicoene, the Silent Woman "Hedonism, scheming bachelors, backstabbing family members, spoiled old
men and aggressive sorority sisters seem standard fare in the daily goings-on at the ivory tower. In addition to Americas educated, the aristocracy of playwright Ben Johnsons time apparently had
similar flaws, and, if we are to believe his bleak depictions, were little more than conniving, self-centered fools all battling wits for further gain" (Mina). Throughout this play he
"satirically criticizes the hypocrisies and pretenses of the aristocratic life of his time" (Mina). In terms of gender we note that the entire premise of the play involves the
search for a silent woman for one old rich man. He wants a woman who will be silent and do whatever she is told. This offers us a look at
the chauvinistic views of the time, though highly exaggerated perhaps, and the mindless and selfish needs of men. This sort of satire is first seen in the opening scene where
"The stylish young Ned Clerimont, apparently drunk, stumbles in, sips a cup of who-knows-what, sips another cup, and then proceeds to examine the articles of feminine clothing strewn variously across
the room," indicating that he is clearly a user of woman (Mina). Money is an all important theme in this play as Ned and his friend Truewit engage in
trying to take money from the old man for a silent woman. Money is what makes a person, and those of wealth can do anything they want, or so the
