that the initial verbs as well as "the participles are all imperative" (Apple, 2007). The imperative form suggests commands whether it is a negative command, one that prohibits something, like
getting drunk, or a positive command, such as "sing and make music in your heart to the Lord" (Apple, 2007). The five participles follow through as examples of how to
be Spirit-filled, how to achieve the statement "be filled with the Spirit." This passage is complementary to other Scripture. Consider John 4:24, which tells us that "God is spirit,
and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth." And, Psalm 33:4 that tells us that the only way to "worship God in truth is to worship God in
harmony with his word, for all of Gods word is truth" (Apple, 2007). It is very possible that only true believers in the power of the Holy Spirit can
understand the full message in these verses. They know that the Holy Spirit bestows Spiritual Gifts upon believers and is, in fact, a guide for believers for life. They also
know that it is only through total submission that they will gain peace and joy. In Acts 13:52, we read that the "disciples were filled with joy and with the
Holy Spirit." There are many specific instances of persons being filled with the Holy Spirit. Holman (2002) reminds the reader that: the Spirit came upon Jesus Himself when John
