week as if he or she were a character in a TV sitcom. If you believe television, it is quite normal and accepted to have sex with someone you are just dating, to use foul language, and make coarse jokes. The message that television conveys is that "Everybody does it." While this rationale may sound logical by todays standards, it most certainly does not fit with the teachings of Paul in Ephesians 5:1-16. In verses 1 and 2, Paul challenges Christians to be "imitators of God" and to "live a life of love" that imitates the life of Christ. In verse 3, Paul says that there should not be a "hint of sexual immorality, or any kind of impurity, or of greed," as these characteristics are improper for "Gods holy people." Furthermore, Paul raises the standard of behavior expected of Christians even higher in verse 4 by saying that Christians should not indulge in "obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking," but rather should have their focus on "thanksgiving." Stop for a moment and consider the implications of these words. Consider how different the world would be if people actually followed Pauls instructions. First of all, if people endeavored to avoid even a hint of sexual immorality, marriages might once again become more stable and the divorce rate would decline. Consider what it would be like to turn on the TV or go to the movies without having your ears and sensibilities filled with obscenities. As to Pauls reference to "foolish talk" and "coarse joking," basically what Paul appears to be doing is promoting a higher level of social intercourse. Imagine for a moment, what this might be like--No Jerry Springer-type TV shows, with enraged people screaming obscenities at each other and having every other word bleeped out. ...
