Even though there are a number of separate institutions and organisations which are concerned with the maintenance and protection of the environment, such as the EU,
NAFTA and ASEAN, it could be asserted that environmental issues are of global importance, and therefore it is necessary that individual bodies take this into account in terms of the
extent to which they cooperate with one another.
On the other hand, it is also the case that different economic blocs will have their own political and economic aims as a priority,
and therefore their policies may not always reflect what is in the best interests of the environment as a whole, but rather the economic aims of the various countries involved.
This can be seen, for instance, in some of the disputes which have arisen between the USA and the EU under the rules of the WTO, and which can be
seen as having environmental implications.
For example, in 1999 the UK brought in a ban on the sale of asbestos, which is widely acknowledged to be an extremely hazardous building material. However, those
countries which mine asbestos, such as Canada, are free to invoke WTO regulations in order to have the ban lifted, and since those countries which do not abide by WTO
dictates are liable to have massive financial penalties imposed, it is clear that environmental considerations may well be seen as less of a priority than economic ones.
