psychological stress with subsequent responses. It is known that noise, crowding, and temperature can increase aggression. Psychological stress accumulates over time causing frustration, anxiety, and feelings of powerlessness, (Archer, 2012).
People who live in large cities are always subjected to noise and crowded conditions. If these conditions are perceived as being unpleasant, people can become not only aggressive but
depressed (Archer, 2012). It is how we interpret the conditions that leads to stress. If a person does not perceive crowds and noise as annoying or unpleasant, they will not
feel stress (Weber State University, 2012). When the temperature soars unexpectedly, it places more demands on the body and this, in turn, increases a persons irritability (Archer, 2012). There is
a chemical reason for this - extreme heat drains the body of electrolytes and when electrolytes are off balance, moods can be altered (Archer, 2012). This can create more irritability
in the person. Some of the many environmental stressors that humans deal with are smog, air pollution, extreme temperatures, natural disasters, man-made disasters, overcrowding, climate, bugs and insects, and even
the arrangement of objects in a home or office (Weber State University, 2012). Rooms that are too cold or too warm are can also be perceived as environmental stressors. If
the stressor is so strong that it causes a person pain, the fight or flight response can be activated. It also engage a stimulus-response mental state. This theory tells us
that if we are in an environment where there is something stressful and people feel pain, that pain becomes associated with that particular environment and the person will want to
avoid it (Weber State University, 2012). Archer (2012) reported there were 11 people killed and 40 others wounded from gunshots during the most recent Memorial Day weekend in Chicago.
