More specifically then, environmental scanning allows organizations to not only understand their external environment but also the interconnectedness of its various sectors and how that relates to their own organization, which then becomes translated into specific policies, decisions, and planning processes. "Environmental scanning is the exploration phase of a strategic planning process" (Environmental Scanning Principles and Processes, 2004). By systematically scanning the external environment and gathering information, there is a significantly decreased randomness about the entire process that offers many substantial benefits to the organization (Morrison, 1992). Furthermore, such information provides managers with early warnings of potential problems in order that adjustments within the organization can occur (Morrison, 1992). Therefore, the main objectives of an environmental scanning system are as follows: * To detect scientific, technical, economic, social, and political trends and events important to the institution (Morrison, 1992). * To define potential threats and opportunities (Morrison, 1992). * To alter management and staff according to external trends in the marketplace (Morrison, 1992). * To promote a future orientation in the thinking of management and staff (Morrison, 1992). When environmental scanning is used in conjunction with internal analysis, decision makers are able to make the most informed decisions they can about the vision, mission, strengths and weaknesses of the organization (Morrison, 1992).
