With over half of the eighteen thousand five hundred municipal solid waste landfills in existence since 1979 having closed during the last decade of twentieth century, one can readily
surmise that a significant percentage of these now-defunct landfills have contributed in some way to environmental degradation. That technology and time have synergistically created a better way to store
human waste speaks to a greater understanding of how mankind can handle its garbage problem without threatening groundwater supplies; however, this knowledge did not exist to such an extent when
many of these closed up receptacles were built and put into operation, leaving a gaping void - both literally and figuratively - for groundwater contamination. For example, "watchdog groups
fear that lead, cadmium, mercury and other hazardous materials in electronic devices could leak from landfills into groundwater and endanger public health and the environment" (McMahon, 2002, 03A).
Garbage is a significant concern in contemporary society, inasmuch as the global population continues to rise, people have become more wasteful and the products of
modern convenience - such as plastics and Styrofoam - have rendered the earth a dumping ground for nonbiodegradable refuse. As such, the manner by which communities choose to address
