urban environment constitutes a threat to health from environmental pollution (Hass, 2004). A healthy human body can adapt to mild or periodic exposure to pollutants (Hass, 2004). This is because
our immune, gastrointestinal and liver functions, as well as other systems of elimination, play a significant role in cleaning the body of toxins (Hass, 2004). However, with increased or prolonged
exposure to environmental pollution, the ability of these systems to rid the body of contaminants is compromised. The role that herbal medicine can play in fortifying and facilitating the bodys
internal resources through cleansing is frequently overlooked in the modern world. Radiation, from microwaves, computers, and other appliances, can break down cellular structure. Algin (from seaweed and algae), wheat
bran, apple pectin, alfalfa and kelp are all naturally occurring products that can be utilized to counteract the effects of environmental radiation (Mowrey, 1986). Miso, a fermented soybean paste that
is frequently used in soup is also known to protect against pollution and radiation (Hass, 2004). While Mowrey warns that raw alfalfa should be supplemented with 200 units of Vitamin
E, he also states that that there are no contraindications for consuming these anti-radiation, anti-pollution foods. Mowrey (1986) also states that algin and kelp are incredibly good protection against
the effects of carcinogens and toxins (p. 88). Canadian scientists have found that algin, although non-digestible in an of itself, can help prevent living tissue from absorbing radiation materials,
including strontium-90, barium, mercury, zinc, tin, cadmium, manganese and zinc (Mowrey, 1986). Bran and pectin also protect against environmental toxins by helping to cleanse the bowels (Mowrey, 1986). As
this suggests, bran and pectin represent types of fiber. Dietary figure is usually defined as "vegetable substances which are not digested by the enzymes of the human alimentary tract" (Mowrey,
