EMAS have the requirement for an environmental policy statement to be part of the system (Dasgupta et al, 1997). For an environmental policy statement to be effective there are certain
elements that need to be included in the policy to be understandable and others which are advisable if the policy statement is to be effective. For a policy to
be effective employees, and other stakeholders need to understand what the policy is and how it is being enacted. This is where the environmental policy statement comes in; the statement
should include a commitment to compliance with relevant environmental regulations and/or legislation, and commitment to the way it will be implemented and a commitment to continuous improvement (Levy and Newell,
2005; Dasgupta et al, 1997). Unlike mission statements and vision statements and environmental policy statement is likely to be longer, starting with an introduction which presents the article aims
of the organization in the context of its environmental impact. The document can be in the form of a number of paragraphs, other companies may choose to utilize an introduction
and then put points. Whichever approach is utilized significant areas of contents remain the same. The first part of the statement should confirm the companys commitment to environmental management strategies.
This will often include a recognition of the impact the company is having on the environment. The initial commitment needs to be followed by a section which deals with the
principles by which the company will operate. The first of these will be a commitment to comply with regulations and legislation which impact on the company. In some instances there
