Essay / Research Paper Abstract
This is a 3 page paper discussing environmental (nurture) influences on cognitive development in middle childhood. Middle childhood, which extends from 6 to 13 years of age, is a highly transitional and productive learning period in regards to cognitive development. Children are cognitively leaving the preoperational stage which is primarily based on the relationships between symbols, language and the environment and enter the concrete operational stage which is concentrated on the concrete and abstract abilities of the child. During middle childhood, research has found that children need an interactive and supportive environment both at school and at home which provides cooperative learning yet allows the child to ask as many questions as needed in order to “mentally manipulate” information.

growth of children and adults through the developing age ranges. Generally, the age ranges are: prenatal, from conception to birth; infant, from birth to two years; toddler, from two to
three years of age; early childhood, from three to six years of age; middle childhood, from six to thirteen years of age; adolescence, from thirteen to twenty years of age;
young adulthood, from twenty to forty years; middle adulthood, from forty to sixty five; and late adulthood, from sixty five years and up (Planet, 1999). Most developmental studies involve the
ages from prenatal to adolescence in regards to the various genetic and environmental factors which can influence development; also know as nature versus nurture. Personality and intelligence studies involve discussion
of both these elements. In regards to environmental (nurture) elements which influence and increase cognitive development, researchers often refer to the early work
of Jean Piaget (1896-1980) who formulated stages of cognitive development which were: the sensorimotor stage from birth to two years; the preoperational stage from two to seven years; the concrete
operational stage from seven to eleven years; and the formal operational stage, from eleven year and beyond (Planet, 1999). A study involving middle childhood (from 6 to 13 years of
