waters, ground water, and aquifer depletion? In order to understand the relationship, please define surface water, runoff, watershed, groundwater, and aquifer. Give an example of the repercussions of
overdrawing surface water and ground water. Water is a finite resource. Any overdraw of
surface and ground water has impacts on the aquifer itself. Surface waters, of course, are those waters that lie on the ground surface as opposed to those that permeate
through the soil to form groundwater. Groundwater, in contrast, collects within the substrate itself. It permeates through that substrate until it reaches an impenetrable layer and begins to
move laterally as opposed to vertically. Groundwater is connected to surface waters in that it discharges to those waters. Surface waters are
comprised of runoff, water that is defined by its movement from the area of initial precipitation or snowmelt to larger water bodies. Runoff comes from watersheds, areas of land
that channels any water that falls upon its surface to a particular surface stream. The larger the watershed the larger the surface stream that it contributes to. While
a small stream might derive its water from an area as small as a square kilometer, a larger river like the Mississippi derives its water from a tremendous expanse of
land. Overdraws of surface and ground waters can directly impact the aquifer itself. Likewise, overdraws from the aquifer endangers both the surrounding
