Young children know very little of their world. They have, after all, only been exposed to a limited part of
that world. They are familiar with their homes and perhaps a bit of their neighborhood. They may even recognize parts of the extended environment as they drive to
and from one place to another in their worlds. Understanding how each part of their smaller world relates with the world overall, however, is imperative if children are develop
not just understanding but enough respect and know-how that they can eventually become the stewards of that world. One thing that parents can do to help develop this understanding
and respect is to take their children on an environmental literacy walk. Most young children think food just magically appears when they open
the refrigerator door. Water, in turn, appears with the simple turn of a knob. They seldom even think about where the waste that is generated in their home
goes and how both the resources that the home uses and the waste it produces can adversely impact not just their world but everyones world. According to the Institut
National dEtude Demograpiques (INED), there were 7 billion human beings on the earth in 2011. Five new people are born every second (INED). Two die (INED).
