The term "nanotechnology" was first made popular by Eric Drexler in the 1980s (Center for Responsible Nanotechnology, 2005). Drexler was first regarded by many as a crazed visionary
(Regis, 1995). Drexlers visions, however, quickly became reality. They now, in fact, are reflected in a significant component of our modern technology. Nanotechnology is a wondrous technology
and one that holds tremendous promise. It is also a potentially dangerous technology, however, and one that can negatively shake our environment as it has never been shaken before.
Nanotechnology is the ability to work on a molecular level to create practically anything. Instead of starting with conglomerates of raw materials,
much of which will be discarded, altered, and discarded in the manufacturing process, nanotechnology allows the manufacturer to start at a molecular level to produce precisely what it is that
they desire. Its products could feasible include items as large or larger than an automobile or as small as microscopic robots which could have the capability of literally traveling
through the body making one repair after another. Food could be produced out of the basic molecular elements that make up our world as could consumer goods. Drexlers
visions were even more astonishing. With nanotechnology the chasm between the rich and poor of the world would disappear and, in theory, the world would finally come into a
peaceful stability (Regis, 1995). As would be expected given the time and circumstances, Drexlers visions were largely discounted by a significant percentage of those that heard them. Almost
everyone from politicians to scientists smirked at such preposterous predictions. A handful of supporters, however, were not so quick to ridicule Drexlers visions. Physicist Richard E Smalley was
