lost to their new world and lost to the old world of their people. It is a story, primarily, of one man who is in search of himself after serving
in WWII, coming home to his native land only to find depressing realities all around him. Margaret Atwoods novel is also a book that speaks of seeking ones identity,
but in this case it is a woman in search of her father. She embarks on a journey with others and the story presents something of a mystery while examining
the human condition. Both of these stories provide us with a look at individuals who rely, to one extent or another, on their natural environment, on their connection with the
earth. In this the earth is often presented as a healing entity. The following paper primarily focuses on how this is seen in Silkos novel, with brief presentations of how
such perspectives can also be seen in Atwoods novel as well. The Power of the Earth In Silkos story we have Tayo, a man who has returned to his
homeland only to find that he is confused and lost. In many ways he is suffering from post traumatic disorder, having seen so many people die in the war, and
returning home only to find his friends drunk and lost to the world. He essentially needs healing and he can only find healing through connecting with his heritage and through
the land that belongs to his people. If he does not find this healing he will surely die because he cannot keep any food down and is slowly dwindling. He
needs a medicine man and this man comes to him and gives him herbs that help his stomach, but it is the stories that really begin to heal Tayo. And
