gender, and almost any aspect of their personality. The following paper examines, individually, the notion of entrapment, displacement and concealment and how they can be exhibited through education, family and
community. The paper then examines the notion of culture as it relates to entrapment, displacement and concealment as seen through Esmeraldo Santiagos work "Almost a Woman." Entrapment Entrapment can,
realistically, be many things. A person can feel trapped in a culture that is not theirs or they can feel trapped in a home where they are made to be
someone other than who they are. A person can feel entrapped in their work or in their classroom. A woman who is abused by her husband is a woman
who is obviously entrapped in many ways. She may be entrapped by his threats and also entrapped by emotional needs associated with her husband. She is entrapped through fear for
herself and her children if there are children, and may have no place to turn and thus is entrapped. A man can feel entrapped in his marriage as well,
perhaps feeling he is pressured to make enough money to support the family and receiving little encouragement or affection in his home. Many men are all but living under a
womans thumb, living up to her expectations and not wanting to leave out of obligation or because of children. In essence both women and men can find themselves seriously entrapped
