With increasing technological developments there is the potential for firms to buy off the shelf ERP that can offer the desired seamless integration. However, perceptions are not always accurate and
achieving desired results can be more difficult than expected. The value, when it is created, is not as a result of the product itself, like
any tool the value is the way it is used. If used efficiently there is little doubt it can add value (Kremers and Van Dissel, 2000). In many cases the
adoption of an ERP system is not for ideological reasons where there is the aim for increased efficiency and better practice as a result of pull motives, it is more
often a migration linked to necessity with push motivations. These include dissatisfaction with the system already in place, the need to deal with issues such as compliance and the expiry
of exiting program support (Kremers and Van Dissel, 2000). In may ways this make the purchase of an ERP system a grudge purchase. This itself can have the impact of
purchasers failing to plan for the full advantages it may bring and look to improve the current position without a full understanding of how value can be added (Kremers and
