Current Situation; Key Issues Grocery warehouse supervisor Arthur Reed oversees the shipping dock, and must ensure that workers are available during two shifts daily to receive shipments to the warehouse. The summer months are problematic in that regular workers are taking their vacations and also tend to call in sick more often. Reed must ensure that there are workers present in sufficient numbers to unload trucks in the shortest amount of time possible. Using workers from temporary agencies has not been an effective solution in the past, and Reed has had little success in hiring temporary workers to work only when needed. Further, he cannot add additional full-time workers that could be available to fill in on days when they are needed. The case states that the job pays only slightly above minimum wage and that workers must pay union dues from that pay level. Though workers must wear steel-toed shoes, they are not required to own them. Workers are not guaranteed any specific number of hours and they receive no benefits.
