the stereotypical outraged Pastor who spouts warnings to his people. If they do not obey God, they will go to hell and it is as simple as that. Some words
from this now classic piece of literature are as follows: "There is no want of power in God to cast wicked men into hell at any moment. Mens hands
cannot be strong when God rises up. The strongest have no power to resist him, nor can any deliver out of his hands. He is not only able to cast
wicked men into hell, but he can most easily do it" ("Sinners," 2002). This is a rather extreme point of view but it is not rare. Rather, the more tolerant
and introspective view appears to be the rare one. An example of an individual who thought deeply was Benjamin Franklin. He uses his autobiography to show others how to be
successful in life by writing about nature and the human condition. Also, exuding from his work are ideas about the proper relationship between the individual and
society, the origin and aims of morality and religion, and more. In making his arguments, Franklin demonstrates a radical departure from, and challenge to, the assertions of Jonathan Edwards. Ben
Franklins autobiography is also characteristic of Enlightenment thought which sought to reconfigure the existent notions of human potential, human purpose, and human morality. Hence, one may compare and contrast ideas
of Franklin and that of the Enlightenment with ideas to emanate from those who have Edwardss view. It is important to note that Franklins autobiography is not like most others
