Best known to exist in France, many rulers were Enlightened Absolutists through out Europe. Although based on the personal desires and wishes of the ruler, the common man did benefit
from Enlightened Despotism. Additional freedoms were allowed that fostered growth in the countries in the areas of education, the arts and the sciences.
Republicanism and Enlightened Despotism are dissimilar. Republicanism is the rule by the people. Enlightened Despotism is a dominate rule - although benevolent - by a monarch.
The movement toward Enlightened Despotism and on to republicanism may have been the beginnings of democracy. Some variations of Enlightened Despotism exist to this day. Define Enlightened Despotism
Despotism belongs to a category describing forms of government similar to tyranny, autocracy, dictatorship and totalitarian (Despotism, 2005).
Enlightened despotism is interchangeable with the term enlightened absolutism. The terms refer to a period in history in the 18th century and early 19th century when people were governed
by absolute rulers (Enlightened Absolutism, 2005). One of Frances best known authors and philosophers, Voltaire supported this system of government (Enlightened Absolutism, 2005). Voltaire kept in contact with
several of the head governmental officials during the period of Enlightenment (Enlightened Absolutism, 2005). As a respected scholar of his day, the opinions of Voltaire greatly influenced social, economical
and political arenas. Those rulers who were consisted to be Enlightened Absolutists were Maria Theresa of Austria (1740-1780), although it is debated as to whether or not Maria was truly
