adventures that are part of that friendship. As the title would suggest, the story is about Gilgamesh. However, the one responsible for changing this man, this ruthless and feared leader,
was Enkidu. The following paper examines who Enkidu is, his purpose, how he changes and the influence he had on Gilgamesh. Enkidu In the beginning of this story
we see how the people plead to the gods to help them, to protect them from the leader Gilgamesh. He is a man who uses women and frightens the people
with his selfish intentions. The gods decide that they should send a creature, a man, a being, that will challenge Gilgamesh and kill him perhaps, or just keep him busy
so he takes his focus off of the people. This creature is Enkidu. Enkidu was very much a creature, an animal of sorts, with great powers of strength. He was
the perfect individual to do battle with Gilgamesh. He was wild and savage like an animal and very ignorant about humanity and life itself. There was a sort of clause,
however, in that if Enkidu gave in to the seductive powers of a woman and lost his virginity he would lose much of his strength and wildness. In his
wild state Enkidu represents the noble savage, the noble animal that is pure of spirit and strong. He was to balance out the negative qualities possessed by Gilgamesh. His purpose
was to essentially take Gilgamesh down a notch in his arrogance and power through a humble and natural creature. However, Enkidu did give in to the seductive powers of a
woman before he ever encountered Gilgamesh and this took away much of his savage simplicity. It is quite unlikely that the gods intended for this to happen for the
