and 12 percent of the patients in hospitals nationwide fall at least one time during their hospital stay (Coussement et al, 2008). In hospital floors with nonambulatory or restricted
populations, including stroke rehabilitation units, the fall rates increases to almost 50 percent (Coussement et al, 2008). Though many hospitals have implemented fall prevention strategies and protocols for patient
care that are based on systematic methods for prevention of falls, falls continue to occur. In fact, existing research identifies falls in the presence of fall risk protocols as
a problematic factor in developing safety measures in the carative environment (Coussement et al, 2008). The problem of falls is so extensive that hospitals have assessed it in terms
of the injuries caused by falls, the impacts to human health and well-being, based on quality of life measures, and in terms of the economic impacts of falls on hospitals
facing the potentiality of litigation as a result of falls. In the implementation of a modified Heindrich II Fall Risk Model, systems must be put in place to define
the measurement of outcomes that can demonstrate whether improvements occur in the presence of protocols to reduce falls. These measurements must reflect changes for patient populations, changes for nursing
populations, and changes within the structure of the hospital or facility as a whole. Because falls impact patients health, nursing process and hospital economics, these elements are instrumental in
determining the success or failure of fall reduction protocols. The Falling Star Program and Fall Interventions relates one protocol with measurable components that can be used to prevent falls
in a hospital setting. The Falling Star Program identifies both monitoring and nursing safety guidelines that can be implemented to reduce falls. These include the use of assessments to
