Employees are motivated by a myriad of things inclusive of praise for a good performance, but they are also motivated by money, power, benefits and recognition. In order to increase motivation, managers and organizational strategists will want to consider psychological and group theories. Content theories of motivation like Maslows Hierarchy of Needs and Herzbergs Motivation-Hygiene Theory are relevant to this discussion ("Chapter," 1999). McClellands Needs Theory also describes factors that cause people to put effort into their work (1999). While the precise factors suggested by the theorists are not necessarily applicable in all societies, their basic framework does serve as a starting point for understanding needs (1999). One can see where these theories would play a role in a CEOs decision making as it concerns human resources. Many companies today implement benefits so that they meet the basic needs of their employees. For example, some companies offer free counseling and others provide for the bulk of ones medical care including vision and dental services. In such an example, the company nurtures the employee so that he or she will view the employer as a provider of services for their specific needs.
