Marys NHS Trust. This case study is related to the Personal Assistant to the Chief of Service, who also acts as Administrator for the Renal Directorate at St. Marys. There, a hostile work environment had been discovered and a student writing on this subject made recommendations to alleviate the problem. Some changes have already been implemented and these were successful. Yet, communication deficiencies between the personal assistance and his direct manager continue to be strained. Recommendations to come from a student report is that staff is to be treated as the essential community. A second recommendation is that interaction with junior members of staff should be enhanced because it makes them feel valuable and this is conducive to a happy environment. Other suggestions include the idea that computers be replaced because they are out of date. A telephone extension should be installed for research fellows as well because there are only two lines for seven employees. Also, someone should be given the responsibility to look after administrative staff as it respects training and other activities. Because all of the departments within the unit are working towards one goal, functions should be managed collectively to avoid individualism and unnecessary territorial protection. It seems that the purpose of the old system was typical as the facility needed communications. However, in health care, and particularly when transplant patients are involved, communication is key. Many communication errors in the health care field have resulted in mishaps, sometimes even causing death. Therefore, it is imperative that the department be better organized. Not only are the perfunctory communication processes at issue, but within the structure of the organization, there are additional needs. The corporate culture has been problematic.
