regard to their adaptability. Unlike those without learning disabilities, special needs students cannot perform at the same level and, therefore, must have some measure of adaptation in order to
fulfill the requirements of typical job duties. One can readily surmise how special needs students can, indeed, function in a typical work setting as long as they are given
the appropriate opportunities to prepare for such a challenge. Modifications are critical to the overall performance of special needs students; without these adaptations of hand-on applications and parent/teacher interaction,
the mentally challenged student has a greater difficulty comprehending what is expected. Teachers, parents and school administrators must endorse this preparatory component in order to bolster the confidence and
aptitude levels of special needs students whose next step is to secure gainful employment. "In its most adaptive state, success is seen as the result of personal competence, whereas
failure can be overcome by effort. Ability, in an academic context, can be characterized as consisting of aptitude and learned skills, whereas effort is the level of exertion applied
to a situation, either temporarily or over time" (Clark, 1997, pp. 69-79). In-school practice is an integral part of the overall readying
process for special needs employment, whereby teachers are readily able to assess the mentally challenged students grasp of ability on a particular job by studying the results of in-school participation.
