context of certain texts, it is easy to assimilate the differences to which it refers. In Graham Greenes England Made Me and in John Betjemans Collected Poems, both authors
tend to make statements about England and Englishness. Graham Greenes novel is about the black sheep of a British family. His statement about England is that it is a
shallow society that the English held dearly in the twentieth century. There is an incisive look at what "doing the right thing" actually leads to. Greene makes it
a point to thoroughly explain that the ideological English society is less than an honest one, in that it possesses values that are not ones of which to be proud.
Each text shows an awareness which is raised to the partiality of these England characteristics. Greenes England consciously exposes the England which is shaped by class division
and snobbery. Yet it contradicts itself in many ways. There are definitely limits to such awareness in the unwitting move to align itself with the selfsame England which
it offers up to criticism. Nowhere is this more aspect evident than in the manner by which the characters are presented within England Made Me. When Greene judges the
values within, England holds itself it is in less than positive light. Indeed, it can readily be argued that this is his right and his ideological viewpoint. It
is made evident, however, that the characters are presented in such a way as to contradict the very message Greene is trying to convey. For instance, the societal rules
