Nigeria and Walcott of the Caribbean. Yet, despite this background, each man chooses to express himself in the language of colonial oppression
English rather then in a language native to his region. The reasons behind this choice stem from facts that concern the realities of a colonial heritage. But in addition to
this perspective, the use of English can be seen as a tool that serves to underscore the sense of dislocation that is evident in the work of both authors.
Achebe has addressed his use of English in numerous interviews and in his own essays. He writes, "You could not administer Nigeria for one minute without English...This is the reality
I see. I accept that reality" (Arnove 278). Achebe emphasizes that he writes for the whole nation of Nigeria, not for any one tribe, and therefore, he doesnt restrict himself
to one tribal tongue. However, Achebes argument for English usage can also be seen as more than merely resigned acceptance (Arnove 278). Even a cursory look at Achebes work shows
