the reader with different takes, perspectives, on the English language and how different people may use that language. They both come from different angles but ultimately both indicate that the
English language, and perhaps any language, is very complex. The following paper presents an analysis and then a synthesis of the two works, illustrating how language, and the use of
the English language, is a very personal and cultural reality. Analysis In Tans work she illustrates her fascination with the English language, and language in general. She primary
focus of her essay, however, is the way in which her mother uses the English language and as a result, how she uses language as well. It presents the intriguing,
and enlightened, reality wherein ones seemingly "broken" English is not a reflection of their intelligence but more a reflection of their culture and their perception of the simplicity of language.
For example, people who are white, who have lived in the United States for many generations use a form of the English language that is very complex in comparison to
the manner in which Tans mother uses the English language. This led Tan to see her mother as less than she was. She notes, "I know this for a fact,
because when I was growing up, my mothers limited English limited my perception of her. I was ashamed of her English. I believed that her English reflected the quality of
what she had to say" (Tan). But, within her essay she clearly illustrates that what her mother had to say, and what her mother was capable of understanding, were far
