a time shortly after the Industrial Revolution, and England had changed immensely as a result. There are many economic, social and political implications of the change. Many trends were a result of the dramatic shift due to industrialization and imperialism. During this period of time, it was a new age of imperialism for England despite the fact that it lost the American colonies. Being on top as a world power had a psychological effect. Coupled with the effects of the industrial revolution, the people would become more affluent. The society would go from one that had primitive, rural roots to one of high society. This was partially a political change and partially a change attributable to advances in technology. One important change occurred in the context of agriculture. Obviously, todays cities were once farms, but the farms would live alongside cities and the early farms have change a great deal. The Industrial Revolution above all gave way to a factory-centered civilization which was characterized by mass production (ODonnell, 1996). Thousands of identical products were made on assembly lines by workers who performed specific, synchronized, repetitive tasks (ODonnell, 1996). In order to perform these tasks, the workers would have to be trained. From the industrial revolution sprang new industries where workers emerged as skilled as opposed to unskilled. Many of the skills they acquired were specific. From there, new trades were born. The workers in society were transformed as well. For England, the revolution would represent a significant shift. In fact, Admiral Lord Cochrane early in the nineteenth century claimed that England would be ruined without the advent of machines (Fuller, 1987). During the revolution, the industry would change dramatically. Some of the things that were altered at around the time was the advent of good, fertile soil (Isermeyer, 2005). ...
