For this reason, it is worthwhile to examine the role that engineers play in operations and how that role contributes to victory. In particular, this paper will explore the Battle of Baghdad that occurred during the Second Iraq War in 2003. Because of the unique theater of operations for this battle, the United States Armed Forces relied heavily upon engineering actions in order to maximize the strategic advantage and claim a more decisive victory. The operations of engineers in the context of this operation will be analyzed through references to the United States Army Field Manual 3-0 for Operational Protocol and the Field Manual 3-34 for Engineering Operations. The content of these sources is of course consistently reviewed by the military itself and thusly can be assumed to be authoritative. The Battle of Baghdad occurred in April 2011, just over a month into the wider scale Operation Iraqi Freedom that instigated the Second Iraq War. The goal of the operation was to capture Saddam Hussein and Baath Party officials, thereby undermining their political hold in the country and advancing the aims of the war. To these ends, the battle pitted the United States Army, Marine Corp., and Air Force, as well as the British Royal Air Force against the Iraqi Army, the interior Republican Guard, the Special Republican Guard, and Saddams elite bodyguard regiment, the Fedayeen Saddam. The Coalition Forces numbered roughly 30,000, while the Iraqi soldiers numbered roughly 45,000. The campaign took place amidst a dense urban environment, in a desert climate of sweltering heat and freezing nights.
