paper traces trends in energy conservation that could be applied to the frozen foods industry Discussion We know that costs have risen across the industry; thats a given. Thus, the
first thing we might do is consider where increasing prices impact the frozen foods industry most severely, so what is it that is peculiar to this industry that we can
assess in this regard? First, frozen foods have to be cooked, flash-frozen, stored and then shipped. That means there must be a plant where the food is prepared; there must
be warehouse facilities where the food is stored, and they must be very cold; and there must be a fleet of refrigerated trucks to move the food, either to the
wholesaler, distributor, or to another transportation hub. All of this in turn means that the industry uses a lot of electricity, which is usually produced by burning oil, not only
in producing the food but in heating and cooling the plants. Lets see if we can find ways to reduce costs at any one of these steps. Kraft Foods has
turned to "Rockwell Automations Power & Energy Management Solutions (PEMS) team to develop and execute a sustained energy reduction initiative across all its manufacturing facilities in North America" (Kraft launches
energy reduction initiative, 2004). The energy conservation project at Kraft "illustrates just how much changing opinions concerning waste, energy consumption and emissions are forcing manufacturers to alter their methods of
operation" (Kraft launches..., 2004). Another food giant, Unilever, is also "actively looking" for ways to reduce energy consumption, and fitted a UK distribution center with "state-of-the-art insulation and energy re-use
facilities [that have] produced savings in refrigeration costs of some 40 per cent compared with traditional designs" (Kraft launches..., 2004). One company, Rich Products Corporation, has reduced costs throughout its
