seriously. It is only with a concerted effort that real progress can be made in terms of energy conservation. The old adage of a penny saved is a
penny made is just as applicable to the concept of energy conservation as it is to economics! One of the primary reasons that we must conserve energy is that
our resources are limited. Many of the resources that we consume in the production of energy are the same resources that can be applied towards putting food on our
tables or meeting other of our biological or sociological needs. Indeed, even when these resources cannot be directly applied to such functions they are most always at least indirectly
applicable. Exhausting them for purposes that can be met in more prudent ways is inexcusable Energy might be defined as the ability to do work. From
a biological perspective we get our energy from the food that we eat. Sociologically, however, energy is a different type of beast. Typically when we think of energy
from a sociological perspective we think of petroleum products and electricity. In reality there are many different types of energy. Some are renewable but others are not.
The renewability question comes into play not just when considering the energy itself but also the products or services that that energy is used to produce. When one is
conserved so is the other! Energy, of course, can be categorized into two distinct classifications. These are carbon based energy sources and non-carbon based energy sources. Petroleum products
belong to the first category and sources of energy such as solar energy belong to the second. Petroleum products, i.e. things such as gasoline, diesel, and even natural gas
