its most basic activities. Although we utilize various types of energy, our primary energy utilization revolves around internal combustion engines. Internal combustion engines are fueled primarily by petroleum
products and this results in a very real environmental impacts. Fully mitigating these impacts is likely an impossibility but we can work to greatly reduce our dependence on petroleum
products and to improve environmental areas that have been adversely impacted by energy utilization and to create new more ecologically productive areas from areas that have been adversely impacted.
When considering the ways we can reduce the adverse impacts our energy consumption has on the world we must first realize that
there are two distinct classifications of energy sources. These are carbon based energy sources and non-carbon based energy sources. Petroleum products of course belong to the first category.
Fortunately, there are many alternatives to carbon based energy even in regard to how it is utilized in internal combustion engines. There are also renewable forms of carbon
based energy that can have less overall environmental impact. One example is recycled vegetable based fuels, an example that will be discussed more fully below.
The second consideration that must be made when contemplating how to reduce and mitigate the adverse impacts these specific aspects of our energy consumption
has on the world is the precise nature of those impacts. Petroleum fuels have a particularly varied impact. First, petroleum based fuels are non-renewable. While the earth
holds vast reserves of this type of energy, eventually those reserves will eventually be exhausted if we continue to utilize them. Because they took millions of years to establish,
