survivors guilt as they try to resume a normal and rational life, something which is incredibly allusive and distorted. In the following paper we present a summary of Singers book.
Summary Herman Broder is a polish and Jewish man. He is in his 30s and is essentially lost. He has survived WWII and the possibility of death in
a concentration camp because he was hid in a hayloft of a Polish farm throughout the years. The one who took care of him all those years was the simple,
non-English speaking peasant woman Yadwiga. She has taken care of him, hiding him, and feeding him, throughout the years of WWII. And, when the war, and the threat are over,
Herman feels an obligation to this simple woman. He feels a debt of gratitude and with no other option, as far as he can see, he marries her. Now, it
should be noted that Herman has a wife who he believes was killed during the war. He feels he has the freedom to marry considering she is dead. Yadwiga and
Herman live in Coney Island where he continues to take care of Yadwiga out of obligation. But, he cannot forget his past, his wife, or the guilt he feels at
having survived the war. In his obligation to Yadwiga he feels no passion, no life, no future. He feels that she is too ignorant and too innocent to incite such
passion within him. He is only married to Yadwiga out of the obligations mentioned. As a result of this guilt, and his passionless life, he becomes attracted to Masha.
