many immeasurable ways. War is a horrendous reality that psychologically strains individuals in ways that are unfathomable for the most part. While some cultures are more accustomed to warfare, almost on a daily basis, than others, all people are affected and ultimately change in some manner or form. It could well be argued that the Vietnamese people were far more accustomed to living in constant warfare of one kind or another, especially in comparison to soldiers from the United States. With these issues and realities in mind the following paper examines four different works which address the Vietnam War from different perspectives. The paper examines and analyzes the psychological endurance of the cultures and the changes that war causes within various characters. In analyzing these works the paper illustrates how it seems that the invading force, in the form of American soldiers, suffered more psychologically as they engaged in, and endured warfare that was relatively common to the Vietnamese people. The works analyzed, first separately and then compared, are Philip Caputos "A Rumor of War," Le Ly Hayslips "When Heaven and Earth Changed Places: A Vietnamese Womans Journey from War to Peace," Tim OBriens "The Things They Carried," and Michael Bilton and Kevin Sims "Four Hours in My Lai." A Rumor of War In Caputos work he states, in the beginning, "In a general sense, it is simply a story about war, about the things men do in war and the things war does to them. More strictly, it is a soldiers account of our longest conflict, the only one we have ever lost, as well as the record of the long and sometimes painful personal experience" (Caputo, 1996; xiii).
