Microsoft Office is filled with several highly useful programs, nearly all of which anyone in an office would have use for at one time or another. Likely the most
often and heavily used component of the Office suite is Microsoft Word. Word did not begin as the industry standard word processor, but
the standard is long what it has been. It is routinely used for letters, memoranda, articles, academic papers and other short documents, but it also is routinely used for
lengthy documents such as book manuscripts. Its powerful formatting capabilities allow it to be used for direct book production. The purpose here is to discuss creating an index
for a long document in Microsoft Word. Indexing Prior to the advent of desktop publishing, creating an index was a long, laborious and
tedious project requiring physical data creation by a reader going through the manuscript page by page. Creating an index in Word also requires going through the full text to
be included in the index page by page, the difference now is that much of the labor of indexing can be accomplished while writing or editing the text.
Word allows the author or editor to create an index using as little text as an individual word or as much as several pages.
It also allows cross referencing. The index is created by marking text of whatever length. The person marking text highlights existing text
