explains and critiques the mission statement of Endicott College. Discussion Paraphrase: The first paragraph says that it is Endicotts mission to help students appreciate professional and liberal studies. As part of the course of study, and a very important part of Endicotts structure, is the opportunity for students to work off-campus as interns; participation in internships is required. Meaning: This means that the college grants liberal arts degrees, not math and science or computer degrees. It doesnt emphasize technological course like, for instance, MIT does. And part of the program entails students going out into the community and working as interns with businesses in their field of study. Paraphrase: The second paragraph describes Endicotts vision, which it says is to develop a well-rounded individual who can work within a diverse community. The student needs to be able to interact with an international community, perform community service, and is expected to have high moral and ethical values. Endicott describes itself as "vibrant" and "innovative" and states that it supports its students in their pursuit of knowledge. Meaning: The college wants to graduate students who can function well in a marketplace that is becoming increasingly diverse. Diverse is a dreadfully overused word but theres really nothing better-it means that in any company, the workforce is likely to be comprised of people of every race, color, creed and sexual orientation possible, and many of them will come from other countries as well. The student has to be able to develop the skill to appreciate people from all different cultures, with a variety of beliefs-some of which will grate on the student.
