last mammal to be discovered from that area. While the Indiana bat is found all throughout the eastern United States, its origin dates back to the caves of the
Appalachian Mountains when, in 1928, hordes were found hibernating. It is speculated that the bats chose this particular location for its high moisture content and temperatures between thirty-nine and
forty-five degrees; however, this has not yet been scientifically proven due to the fact that little else is known about this particular species when it is not in hibernation (Indiana
Bat). The four primary issues pertaining to species decline include human disturbance; cave commercialization and improper gaiting; habitat loss and degradation; and pesticides. That Indiana bats hibernate in clusters
of as many as nearly five hundred per square foot - which translates to twenty- to fifty thousand bats in any given cave - one can easily understand the attraction
these animals evoke in a curious human being. If climate increase or other disturbance disturbs just one cave, the impact upon the population as a whole can be monumental
in nature (Myotis Sodalis). Because much of mans motivation is formulated out of profit, it is not hard to understand the detrimental impact commercialization has had upon the Indiana bat
population. Bats need to be left alone during hibernation; when people are provided with tours into bat territory, it forces the animal to seek other, more suitable locations -
all the while using up a significant amount of its precious energy source in the meantime (Carter 1185-1190). As well, a genuinely honest attempt at protecting bats from human
intrusion can also go awry, causing just as much damage. Much is being done to reverse the detrimental impact mans presence has had upon the Indiana bat population. The
