through the distortion of emotional pain - that it is unnecessary for their loved ones to have these advance directives as alternatives to relieving their ongoing suffering. Yet even
with the advances of modern science to help alleviate the discomfort of terminal illness, there are still situations where medical heroics are no longer applicable for end of life care.
"Without advance directives, families can be torn apart trying to decide what is best for you...Discussing and deciding what you want in advance can take the burden off your
family, who would otherwise have to guess at what youd want done. And no one wants a court to decide his or her fate" (Mayo Clinic, 2007).
Coping with a terminally ill friend or family member is quite painful enough; having the burden of deciding when it is time to stop
all life support or deny heroic measures is something no spouse or loved one should ever have to do (Tulsky, 2005). This is why it is sometimes difficult to
understand the humane element of living wills and DNRs. Until one has been in the place of another who is suffering immeasurable physical pain, not to mention intense emotional
discomfort with the fact that his or her life has been reduced to nothing more than waiting to die, it is not possible to pass judgment as to the association
