there are encyclopedias of Greek mythology, encyclopedias of art, and encyclopedias of almost everything imaginable. The following paper examines the history of the encyclopedia and the figures responsible for the
early versions of the encyclopedia. Encyclopedias ""The word, encyclopedia, is of Greek origin, referring to a complete circle of education"
(Katz 267). It is believed that Thomas Elyot, in a dictionary he compiled in 1538, was the first to really use the word in English "when he defined an encyclopedia
as that lernynge which comprehendeth all lyberall science and studies" (Katz 267). The Encyclopedia can be strongly connected to the Enlightenment movement
of the 18th century. Most people associate the most basic of encyclopedias with Encyclopedia Britannica which "was created during the Scottish Enlightenment of the late 18th Century" (Citizendium). The creation
of the Encyclopedia Britannica is likely something strongly "inspired by the highly influential Enlightenment project, the French Encyclop?die of Jean le Rond dAlembert and Denis Diderot" (Citizendium).
These two men and their work on their enlightening encyclopedia comprises a great portion of the work Enlightening the World: Encyclopedie, The Book That
