marketers study various ways that businesses benefit from being involved in the communities in which they operate. This goes far beyond merely increasing sales in the short term.
It lends longevity to the company by building customer loyalty, but it also provides means for the company to be a good corporate citizen and an asset to the community.
In stark contrast is the company interested only in profits for the short term. Of course any business must make a profit in order to remain operational, but
increasingly people look to the businesses in their communities to give back as well. Many individuals muse that they would like to volunteer
for causes or with organizations but simply do not have time available for volunteer work. Todays busy lives attest to that lack of time. Many people work long
hours and still have home and family matters to attend to in the remaining time available during any particular week or month. Community Involvement
One obvious solution that too few organizations take advantage of is to allow and encourage employees to volunteer labor on company time. Cisco Systems Raleigh office makes employees
available to local nonprofit organizations for up to six months, foregoing all of the benefits of the individuals labor but still paying their salaries and benefits for the time they
are away from the job (Traugot, 2005). Marriott encourages employees to spend up to three hours a week working with local charities - during regular working hours and on
