Christ. The encounters that the Old Testament prophets had with God show that the Almighty would punish all those who broke his covenant severely, even the children of
Israel. Yet, men of faith were presented with visible signs of Gods presence in such a way that there was no doubt that divine forces affected human experience. Those that
were privileged to have these face-to-face encounters with the Divine were always asked to do Gods work, and had obstacles to overcome. As this suggests, they were always irreversibly altered
in ways that directed their lives toward holiness, yet they also remained ordinary human beings. For example, Jacob, although he actually touched a manifestation of the Divine, remained human in
his orientation, demanding a blessing for himself. In Genesis 32: 23-30, Jacob wrestles with a divine representative. Although traditionally, these verses have been interpreted to mean that Jacob fought an
angel, the New International Version (NIV) of the Bible indicates that Jacob felt that he came face to face with God. Certainly, this interpretation is substantiated by the fact that
the divine representative had the power to change Jacobs name to "Israel" (Genesis 32:28), which implies the power of the Almighty. Furthermore, Jacob referred to the place as "Peniel," which
means "face of God" (NIV). These verses record that a "man" (exact origin is unstated) wrestled with Jacob until daybreak. Jacob had the man in a wrestling hold when
daylight came, and refused to let the man go until he blessed him. It is at this point that the man renames Jacob saying that this is because "you have
struggled with God and with men and have overcome" (Genesis 32: 28). In this own way, Moses also "wrestled" with God, since he was quite unsure exactly how to go
