a state of conflict. The Ferghana Valley itself is home to 10 million people, mostly descended from various tribes. In the early 1900s, the valley was divided among the
three stats of Uzbek, Kyrgyz and Tadjik Soviet Socialist Republics but the borders were never clearly delineated. Uzbekistan was the first one to tighten border controls in 1999 by erecting
long barbed wire fences. (Megoran, 2004). Pomfret (2006) reports that most of the border problems have been settled between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan and between Kazakhstan and the Kyrgyz Republic.
Nonetheless, borders in the Ferghana Valley and between Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan continue to be contested. The Ferghana Valley spreads across Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. This area has a special set
of problems with enclaves of different populations. The war against the Taliban in Afghanistan has also helped in terms of border identities (Pomfret, 2006). There is an economic as well
as a political divide in the Ferghana Valley (Pomfret, 2006). Further, the areas is not very secure and is subject to terrorist attacks (Megoran, 2005). Uzbekistan itself is ruled by
a brutal and repressive government (Megoran, 2005). The social and cultural life in Uzbekistan is repressed and oppressed. The president has written books declaring their independence and attesting to the
happiness of all citizens. He states they are surrounded by danger in terms of bordering states (Megoran, 2005). This author observed that music is the one cultural outlet the people
