if so, to what extent? This paper discusses the question of what duty employers owe to their employees in the event of natural disasters. Overview Despite a great deal
of research through many sources, it has been impossible to find any information that states an employer has a legal obligation to help employees facing a natural disaster. That is
not to say that employers do not have a moral, social or ethical obligation to do so, but that legal precedents are absent before a disaster occurs. To clarify further:
the Texas Labor Code, which we will examine in a moment, gives specific instructions to employers about compensating employees who are caught in a natural disaster, but there is nothing
that indicates, for instance, "Company A must erect a shelter for its employees if there is a serious threat of a natural disaster occurring or face fines and penalties." In
other words, it does not appear to be a matter of law that employers provide for their employees before a disaster occurs. This thought occurs because of the long
period that passed from the time the first warnings of Hurricane Katrina were sounded, and the actual landfall of the storm. It seems, given such a scenario, that employers might
have an obligation to employees to help them prepare for an emergency that appeared to be life-threatening, but that concept does not appear to have a basis in law; and
