the context of health and safety HRM. In the first place, he considers what factors are significant in improving the workers health and well-being, and in the second, addresses the
issue of whether or not employee wellness has a direct bearing on productivity, from the organisational point of view. He argues that modern organisational structures have as a main focus
the promotion, rather than the undermining, of workers health, and cites such policies as family-friendly workplaces, research into stress, and HRM strategies aimed at promoting mental and physical well-being.
This is something which, he argues,
must permeate the whole of the corporate ethos, since it involves leadership which regards workers as vital assets and an organisational culture that supports the work-life balance and the promotion
of individual wellness. However, he maintains that demonstrating a direct link between high productivity and worker health is somewhat more problematic. One might assume that this is because in many
organisations, it tends to be an either-or issue. A high performance workplace may well show impressive results in terms of productivity, but one could also argue that high performance is
almost inevitably linked with high levels of stress, and therefore tends to be counter-productive when assessed in terms of the mental and physical well-being of employees.
