problem comes in that prospective employers are not allowed to contact anyone other than the references the applicant has identified and we all know the applicant is not going to
list anyone who would give him a bad reference. There was a time, employers could search for secondary contacts. This was a process of asking an identified reference if they
knew anyone else who had worked with the applicant and calling that other person. The second one usually provided a more accurate rating of the applicant. That is against the
law today; it is considered an invasion of privacy (Richards, 2012). The interview is crucial and questions must be related to the job and the jobs requirements. For instance,
a job may require strong human relations skills, some of which may become apparent in the interview. There are still some strategies the prospective employer can use. Psychological and other
kinds of tests can provide insight but the tests have to have been proven to not discriminate (Richards, 2012). If the job requires certain abilities, these can be assessed. Finally,
the prospective employer could have the applicant demonstrate certain skills. Small companies face these and other challenges. They do not have the same resources as large companies. Usually, they do
not have a human resources department and the managers or even the owner will be doing the hiring. The owner needs to provide training for managers in how to select
