As one individual, or organization, states, "The purpose of the annual evaluation is to assess and communicate the nature and extent of an employees performance of assigned duties consistent with the criteria" (Division of Colleges and Universities: Florida Board of Education, 2003). Of course, many may also argue that a manager or other higher up can assess these realities by merely observing employees. More often than not this is perhaps the most common method of evaluating employees and the performance evaluations are merely used as a more solid indication of an employees performance. And, in addition, very large corporations may rarely have the ability to cohesively understand all employees in regards to their performance. Regardless of method or of reasoning the primary goal of the employee performance evaluation is to determine if the employee is an asset to the company or not. Mission Statement and Performance Evaluation One of the most important elements of understanding how committed an employee is to a corporation or a company comes through their understanding and adherence to the mission statement of the organization. Every company, every corporation, every business, has a mission statement of some kind and their entire business is based on this mission statement. It is the goal of the company. And, if the employee does not understand the mission statement or is performing well, but not in a way that supports the mission statement then the evaluation becomes incredibly important. This is because a company or corporation cannot afford to employ an individual who does not have the same goals, or at least an understanding of the goals.
