fact been more interest in this concept since the 1970s. Firms where employees took at least part ownership in the form of stock options had become more common, at least
accoring to the case. Clearly, the thinking is that if employees have a greater stake in the company, they would perform better. According to the case study, Publix is one
such case where success had come from public ownership. The stores are owned by employees only, and when the food union tried to corral the workers, they did not vote
in favor of unionization. Of course, it would make no sense to unionize a firm that is actually owned by employees. In any event, the case study goes on to
say that when employees own the firm that they work for, interests are aligned. The point that when employees own the company they work for, they are more likely
to have common goals, goes without saying. If someone has stock in a company, they want that company to do well. Of course, they will put in more effort and
not care quite so much about petty things. It is an idea that makes sense. Also, the case study points out that job security is assured--no one has ever
been fired from Publix--and that worker loyalty is also enhanced. If someone has ownership rights in a firm, they are not likely to leave their jobs. They want to help
the company because when the firm does well, they do well also. The case study goes on to say that American Airlines for example has had problems even though more
than half of the company is owned by employees. It has surprisingly had problems with unions. Also, while Southwest Airlines is only 13% employee owned, it had fared better than
