False Economy Reasons for the abbreviated approach to employee orientation extend beyond having less time available. In industries with notoriously high turnover rates, the excuse is that chances are the employee will be leaving after only a short time and so does not warrant the company spending a great deal of time with him. This approach is an example of false economy, however. Failing to adequately explain the companys position on customer service can leave customers with decreasing levels of satisfaction with the company, which of course can translate to decreased sales and revenues. It can open the company to unnecessary charges of sexual harassment, and it can pave the way to unintended violations of wage and hour laws. Considerations There is no need to "reinvent the wheel" in terms of determining the most advantageous approaches to employee orientation. Many companies already have improved their own processes and have made their experiences available to others. From luxury hotels to regional fast-food chains, some businesses have found that greater attention to employee orientation activities can build a more cohesive workforce, increase employee retention and enhance customer satisfaction.
