Emerson (2008) suggests that the concept of empowerment is simply not understood in organizations. As he comments, most people think they know what it means but they dont (Emerson 2008), Many think it has to do with giving up their power as well as their responsibility to lead altogether but that is a misnomer (Emerson 2008). Rather, empowerment incorporates a number of variables and tenets that related directly to job satisfaction (Emerson 2008). There are many descriptions and definitions of employee empowerment. The most common description is "a process of enabling an employee to think, behave, act, react, and control their work in more autonomous ways, as to be in control of ones own destiny" (Emerson 2008, p. 8). This definition does not state in any way that the manager who empowers employees give up the responsibility to lead or even their authority to control what is happening. Empowerment has been shown in the literature to increase job satisfaction, retention ratios, and productivity (Emerson 2008). These are all highly positive outcomes. But, empowerment must be done right. The first variable required when adopting employee empowerment programs is trust (Emerson 2008). Managers must trust employees. Trust comes through ongoing communication, which is at the heart of empowerment (Emerson 2008). Before a manager can empower an employee, he or she must first communicate. The manager must share information with employees, specifically information about how things are run, how the company is doing, what the fiscal health of the company is, and at least some of the aspects of the organizations strategic plan (Emerson 2008). Empowerment when implemented in the right way gives employees a sense of ownership in the organization (Emerson 2008).
