an official employee manual. Some employees do not just follow the rules and for that there is discipline. Discipline policies will be different from one company to the next. A
company is able to rejuvenate its employees through four activities, one of which is discipline (Bartlett and Ghoshal 11). The others are stretch, support and trust (Bartlett and Ghoshal 11).
Discipline however is the cornerstone of many organizations. Yet, expectations vary a great deal from place to place. They will also be very different for public organizations. In certain firms,
one alcoholic beverage at lunch will see that person out the door, because the work may entail contractual agreements or public safety issues, whereas other industries allow or encourage alcohol
use. Things are vastly different in the public sector. Non profit or public organizations have rules and regulations and often, discipline can be harsh. Sometimes, employees are disciplined outside of
the realm of the work environment if the law is involved, or they are disciplined as employees who are perhaps put on notice. In many instances, acting out in the
workplace is punishable with warnings and then disciplinary action. It might be that someone does not get the promotion or raise that they wanted. It might be that they are
let go after all. In most situations, employees are retained, and warned, but much depends upon the error in judgment. In examining this issue, discipline in law enforcement will be
first reviewed. Yet, many of the guidelines created by law enforcement are used in the context of the general workplace. After all, all organizations share some similarities to an extent
